2023 Jeep Wrangler 4XE vs. 2023 Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler has always been known for its rugged resilience and versatile strength, taking it over all types of terrains and through all kinds of conditions. What it has not been known for historically is its fuel efficiency or its environmental friendliness. Enter the Jeep Wrangler 4XE. It has many of the same great features for which the Wrangler is known, but it has a plug-in hybrid engine that reduces fuel consumption.
Here's a closer look at how the 2023 Jeep Wrangler compares with the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4XE:
Powertrain
The most obvious difference between the 2023 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler 4XE is the powertrain. The 2023 Wrangler comes standard with a 3.6-liter V8 engine that puts out 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It can be paired with the standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic.Â
Three additional engine options are available on the 2023 Wrangler:
- Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque
- Turbo Diesel 3.0-liter V6 that puts out 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque
- 6.4-liter V8 that puts out 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque
Four-wheel drive is standard on the Wrangler, regardless of engine option.Â
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4XE comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that's paired with an electric motor. It puts out a combined 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It has an all-electric driving range of 21 miles. The battery can be recharged in as little as 2.5 hours with the right charger. Four-wheel drive remains standard on the 4XE.
Fuel Efficiency
The Jeep Wrangler 4XE is the clear winner when it comes to fuel efficiency. It gets 49 mpg when it is in hybrid mode. When it is running on just the gas engine, it gets a combined fuel efficiency of 20 mpg.Â
In contrast, the base model Jeep Wrangler gets 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway when it is equipped with the manual transmission. When it is paired with an automatic transmission, it gets 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.Â
The Wrangler with the turbocharged four-cylinder gets an estimated 22 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. When equipped with the turbo diesel V6, it gets an estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Finally, when it is equipped with the V8, it gets an estimated 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.Â
Generally speaking, the more power you get, the less fuel efficiency you get. The 4XE gives you the option of more power and more fuel efficiency when you drive it in hybrid mode.Â
Exterior Styling
The Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Wrangler 4XE are essentially the same, but as a special trim, the 4XE does have some distinctions.Â
For 2023, the Jeep Wrangler 4XE is getting new exterior color options. The two new options are Earl, which is a light, metallic blue, and Reign, which is a bright, metallic purple. That brings the total color options to 11, which are:
- Black
- Bright White
- Granite Crystal
- Sting Gray
- Silver Zynith
- Hydro BlueEarl
- Sarge Green
- High Velocity Yellow
- Firecracker Red
- Reign
All of the other color options are available for the Jeep Wrangler.Â
The 4XE also gets a new decal for the 2023 model. It has an American flag on it, and it is featured on the front fenders. The decal pays homage to the U.S. workers who make the Wrangler, as well as to the brand's military heritage.Â
Otherwise, the 4XE shares exterior styling with the Wrangler, including the classic seven-slot grille, round headlights, and boxy profile. Large wheel flares and thick, black bumpers create a striking outline for the Wrangler's profile.Â
Trim Options
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler comes in 14 trim levels:Â
- FreedomWillys
- Willys Sport
- SportSport S
- High Tide
- Sport Altitude
- Rubicon
- Sahara
- Sahara Altitude
- High Altitude
- Rubicon Farout
- Rubicon 20th Anniversary
- Rubicon 392
Three of those trim levels can be purchased as a 4XE, effectively bringing the total number of trim levels for the Wrangler to 18. The trim levels available for the 4XE are the Willys, Sahara, Sahara High Altitude, and the Rubicon. The Willys is effectively the "base model" for the 4XE since it is the lowest trim level available with the hybrid powertrain.Â
The base model Jeep Wrangler includes features like illuminated cup holders, locking glove box, sentry key immobilizer, six-way adjustable driver's seat, four-way adjustable passenger's seat, carpeted mats, removable rear glass, day-night rearview mirror, locking console storage, an eight-speaker audio system, the Uconnect infotainment system with a seven-inch display, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth streaming with integrated voice commands. Safety features include a parking view backup camera, traction and stability control, SiriusXM Guardian Emergency SOS, tire pressure warning, and airbags.
When you upgrade to the first 4XE trim levels, you get additional features, such as as cloth seating, driver lumbar support, metallic interior accents, carpeted floors with rubber mats, front and rear map lights, fade-to-off interior lighting, cruise control with steering wheel controls, proximity key for push button start, and streaming audio.Â
Even more exciting features are offered on both the Wrangler and the Wrangler 4XE as you move up the trim levels, and you get a combination of rugged power and a luxury driving experience if you wish.Â
