2023 Jeep Wrangler Sport vs. 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The Jeep Wrangler is a beloved model in the Jeep lineup. For many years, it has been offered in a stripped down version that focuses on the exceptional performance for which the Wrangler has become known. But in recent years, the offerings on the Wrangler have expanded so that the ride can be so much more than functional.Â
Typically, the Wrangler comes with just two doors, but the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited comes with four doors and a more cushy interior. Here's a closer look at one of the popular trim levels, the Jeep Wrangler Sport, and how it compares to the Unlimited, which is the name added to any trim level that has been optioned in the four-door version:
Performance
There are no automatic changes in performance when you move from the Jeep Wrangler Sport to the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The Sport comes with a 3.6-liter regular V6 engine that puts out 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard.Â
With the Wrangler Unlimited, buyers do have the option to upgrade with a hybrid engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine is a 2-liter four-cylinder that includes two electric motors. The plug-in hybrid powertrain puts out 375 horsepower. All-wheel drive remains standard.
Exterior
The Jeep Wrangler Sport has class styling, and it has exterior features like black side window trim, fender flares, and door handles. There's a black front bumper with two tow hooks, and a black rear bumper with one tow hook. The grille is body-colored, and the side mirrors are black and manually folding.
Front fog lamps are standard, as is light, tinted glass, a removable rear window, and a manual convertible top with fixed roll-over protection. A full-size steel spare wheel and tire are included.Â
You get all these same exterior features on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, but some additional upgrades are available. The Unlimited also has a part-time four-wheel drive system that allows you to move between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive as needed. There is a 4-Lock Mode that provides even distribution of torque to both axles.Â
Interior
The Jeep Wrangler Sport comes with seating for four people, and the interior is a comfortable cloth. Meanwhile, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited comes with seating for five people, with the extra space in the rear seat. You'll find that not only is there an extra seat in the rear of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, but there's also more room generally, giving passengers the option to spread out a bit more. They won't feel cramped riding in the back seat of the Unlimited, and they also won't have to crawl over the front seat to get to their own seat. They can easily open a door and settle in a comfortable seat.Â
Removable carpet and drain plugs are also included on the interior to allow you easy cleaning after off-roading - or just after having one too many messy passengers tagging along on rides.Â
Comfort and Convenience Features
Many upgrades have been added to the 2023 Jeep Wrangler, you'll find great features across both the Sport and the Unlimited. Notably, the Wrangler gets upgrades like push button start and cruise control, which seem like luxury features given the practical nature of the Wrangler's character.Â
The Wrangler Unlimited gets upgraded to air conditioning, though it is manual and single zone. You won't get air conditioning on the Wrangler Sport, and all the door locks and windows remain manual. This is a Jeep built for exploring the open road and getting into muddy adventures. You won't find a lot of frills.
However, the Wrangler Sport does get some modern features, such as the Uconnect 4 infotainment system displayed on a 7-inch touchscreen. The Wrangler Unlimited comes with a slightly larger screen, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
A center console offers cupholders and storage, and the driver's seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel can tilt and telescope. You'll also find audio controls on the steering wheel.Â
Safety Features
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sport is designed with safety in mind, including side impact beams to reduce risk in the event of an accident. Electronic traction and stability control help you to stay in control, even on unsteady terrain, and roll stability control helps to keep you grounded. An airbag occupancy sensor, a backup camera, tire pressure warning system, and the SiriusXM Guardian Emergency SOS system round out the remaining safety features.Â
The Wrangler Unlimited includes all the same safety features, plus it adds child safety locks for the rear doors.Â
Option Upgrades
Several optional upgrades are available with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Most of these are able to be installed with the dealer, but check with a sales associate on the options.Â
Some a la carte options include adding a three-piece hard top to the Wrangler, adding a snorkel for times when you're fording water, or adding satellite radio capability. Additional options are available, including replacing the Command-Trac four-wheel drive mode with a Select-Trac that will operate full time and will automatically transfer engine torque as needed to give the wheels the best grip.Â
