2025 Jeep Compass vs. 2025 Mazda CX-5

SUVs come in all different shapes and sizes from numerous automakers, all vying for the attention of vehicle shoppers. There are plenty of SUV choices when looking for a compact, go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle, which tends to make that final decision a bit nerve-wracking.

To assist you in not making that really bad vehicle purchase, we share some details on two very strong contenders, the 2025 Jeep Compass and the 2025 Mazda CX-5.

So read on as we delve into some detail as to what's on offer.

2025 Jeep Compass

The five-seater Compass is the Jeep brand's sole compact SUV offering for 2025 and also happens to be their entry-level Jeep model for the US market. The Compass continues with little changes aside from some culling of trims to bring the choices down to four for 2025.

Trim levels are, Limited, Sport, Trailhawk, and Latitude.

2025 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is seen continuing for 2025 with no changes besides some tweaks to the trim lineup. The base S trim is back, which allows buyers a more affordable entry point into the Mazda CX-5 ownership experience, and the Premium trim has been discontinued.

For 2025, a total of eight trim levels are available: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Carbon Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and range topper Turbo Signature.

Powertrain Comparison

The 2025 Jeep Compass lineup is fitted with a standard 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, sending power via an eight-speed automatic transmission to all corners through the standard all-wheel-drive system, which endows the little Jeep with some credible off-road capabilities.

For the 2025 model year, the CX-5 is fitted with a naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G, four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine making 187-horsepower@ 6,000 rpm with 185 pound-feet of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

Top trim levels get the more powerful turbocharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder, pushing out 256 horsepower and torque of 320 pound-feet.

All CX-5 trims use a six-speed, 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission with Mazda's i-Activ AWD drivetrain featuring a center limited-slip differential.

Exterior Comparison

The 2025 Jeep Compass shows a traditional upright SUV silhouetted exterior design with hints of the Grand Cherokee, like headlamps integrated into the iconic seven-slat jeep front grille finished in black with chrome accents.

The front and rear bumpers are finished in body color, plus the roof rails are standard fitment.

Key highlights on the exterior design also include auto on/off LED headlamps and fog lamps, plus a rear roof lip spoiler.

The Compass body measures 173.4 inches long, 73.8 inches wide, and 64.8 inches high and rides on a wheelbase of 103.8 inches. A useful ground clearance of 8.3 inches allows for some more adventurous off-road travel.

All 2025 Jeep Compass models ride on alloy wheels from 18 to 19 inches, and five exterior paint colors are available, plus a new limited color called "Joose," which is still to be revealed.

The 2025 Mazda CX-5 wears an exterior design that is sleek and elegant. Restyled bumpers and tailgate are from the 2022 refresh.

The front of the Mazda shows off slim horizontal LED auto on/off headlights with high beam control and a front grille finished with a silver trim surround and daytime running lights.

Sporty touches abound, including the likes of the dual exhaust outlets with a bright finish, roof-mounted "shark fin" antenna, and body-colored rear roof spoiler.

Other standard exterior features include:

  • Body-colored power side mirrors with LED turn signal indicators
  • Rear privacy glass
  • AWD badge

All 2025 CX-5 trims are fitted with alloy wheels ranging from 17-inch to 19-inch sizes, and shoppers can choose from eight available exterior colors.

Interior Design

For 2025, the Jeep Compass offers an impressively well-equipped cabin that features plenty of luxury items, such as heated and ventilated driver and front passenger seats, with the driver getting eight-way adjustable seating with memory settings.

Across all trims, a leather-trimmed and heated steering wheel greets the driver, and occupants will appreciate the dual-zone and automatic temperature control. The luxury experience is enhanced with all-around leather-trimmed seats.

Infotainment equipment sees fitment of a standard touchscreen of 8.4 inches, with the option of a larger 10.1-inch screen. Natural voice recognition and navigation are on offer with wireless Apple CarPlay, plus Android Auto smartphone integration.

Audiophiles will get their kick from the optional Alpine® Premium Audio System with a 12-channel 506-watt amplifier that pumps its serious wattage through nine speakers plus an 8-inch subwoofer to provide some tailgate rattling bass notes.

The Jeep accommodates up to 27.2 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row, growing to a total of 59.8 cubic feet of cargo space once the 60/40 rear seat is folded.

Mazda's high-quality fit and finish interior features a dashboard built around the driver. A 4.6-inch Multi-Information Display with a trip computer is standard, and some key interior features include:

  • 6-way manual driver's and front passenger's seat
  • Air Conditioning with pollen filter
  • Rear air conditioning vents
